Recovery from any chronic condition takes time. The Vicious Circle of Stress keeping you stuck did not form overnight. Healing can take weeks or months depending on how deeply imbedded your condition was. Another way to say this is that in the way that your body used ‘Implicit Learning’ to become unwell, it needs to learn ‘Implicit Learning’ to recover.
Generally, when clients practise self-healing every time they start to feel stressed, lasting recovery can happen within between six weeks to three months. However, from the time you learn the How to Heal tools, you should be able to make positive changes. Using the tools will very quickly become as simple as walking and chewing gum!
- If I chose to see the Nutritionist will I have to take lots of expensive food supplements?back to top
Not at all. Emma Jenks, the How to Heal Nutritionist, will look at all aspects of your life in order to establish the best treatment. Many nutrition issues can be resolved by diet and lifestyle changes alone and Emma never recommends unnecessary supplements. Only in some circumstances are supplements recommended and they are available with Emma’s discount.
- My illness was not because of stress, will this work for me?back to top
We doe not underestimate the power of genetic, environmental or constitutional factors in illness. How to Heal works with many stress related conditions and people regularly find recovery or at the very least that their symptoms reduce significantly. On top of this, the How to Heal programme gives you access to tools that help make you feel good emotionally – resources such as ‘calmness’ or ‘energy’ will be at your fingertips. Even if you do not completely get over your symptoms, you will learn how to access many powerful and wonderful emotions that can bring about a sense of inner peace to help you handle what life throws at you.
- Does it work for everyone?back to top
We cannot guarantee changes, but with the majority of clients they have gotten positive changes when they have used the tools to self-heal consistently in their own time. If you fail to do this, your body and brain cannot form new patterns of wellness and you will not reap the rewards of the programme.

- Is it difficult to understand?back to top
No it is really easy, and we go at your pace. You just need to be committed and want to heal.
- What is NLP, CBT, Visualisations and Coaching? Why do they work well with physical conditions AND behavioural conditions?back to top
a. Why do they work with physical conditions?
NLP, CBT, Visualisations and other therapies work well with many physical conditions when the condition is one that fluctuates with negative thinking and emotions. The main reason for this is that the condition is linked to stress. By changing the thought and emotional habits it actually brings about a biological change in your body which positively impacts your health.
b. Why do they work with behavioural conditions?
Our brains form habits which get stronger with repetition. Habits form more strongly in the mind and body and become unconscious the more stressed we are. However, new habits form when we are happy (and producing feel good chemicals). By practising the tools based on the therapies used in How to Heal, you change the brain map habits AND the habits form quickly because you are in a happy state which helps embed the change more quickly.
c.What is NLP?
NLP is a type of psychotherapy which has traditionally been used for personal development and for success in business. However, in recent years NLP has developed further to work with a broad range of illnesses. NLP is the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do. Because the mind effects the body, using NLP techniques which change your emotional state and thought patterns, you can also change the course of your condition.
The term “Neuro-Linguistic Programming” refers to a stated connection between the neurological processes (“Neuro”), language (“linguistic”) and behavioural habits that have been learned through experience (“programming”) and can be organised to achieve specific goals in life.
NLP presupposes that we are all already programmed and have been learning programmes since birth. Some of these programme work for us and some of them don’t. It presupposes that if someone can do something well then another person can learn to do this as well if they want to change their original programming.
d. What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) aims to solve problems concerning dysfunctional emotions, behaviours and thinking through a goal-oriented, systematic procedure. How to Heal uses CBT tools to help you approach stress in a new way through changes to your thinking habits.
CBT and NLP are different in the sense CBT focuses on your thought patterns whereas NLP also looks at internal conflicts, feelings, and your sensory experiences, which are equally as important in bringing about lasting change.
e. What are Visualisations?
Visualisations are very enjoyable techniques which allows you to use your imagination to visualise specific behaviours or events occurring in your life. For example, you can use visualisation to create a detailed schema of what you desire and then visualise it, such as succeeding at interview. Many studies have shown that when the brain imagines something is true then it activates the muscle and brain maps which are required to achieve it. An example is in a golfer who visualises the “perfect” stroke over and over again to mentally train muscle memory.
In one of the most well-known studies on Visualization in sports, Russian scientists compared four groups of Olympic athletes in terms of their training schedules:
- Group 1 = 100% physical training;
- Group 2 – 75% physical training with 25% mental training;
- Group 3 – 50% physical training with 50% mental training;
- Group 4 – 25% physical training with 75% mental training.
Group 4, with 75% of their time devoted to mental training, performed the best.
How to Heal uses visualisation to help motivate and encourage lasting change. It is a very powerful tool and is easy to use in your own time.
f. What is Coaching?
Coaching is the process of working with someone to help them reach a desired goal. There are many different tools and techniques used to do this in the How to Heal programme, all of these are geared to help you make the changes you want. We set goals and work out how to achieve them. You are encouraged to revisit your personal life mission and vision as much as possible, or just start to think about developing one for yourself. We realise that after suffering from conditions which hold us back in life, we can tend to lose our way. Part of healing is to start to create goals for our self and act upon them. This helps you heal from the condition because it gives you something to live for and focus on.
- What is the Science of Psycho-Neuro-Immunology?back to top
Psycho-neuro-immunology is the study of the interaction between the psyche (conscious mind functioning behaviour and emotion) and its impact on the brain, hormones and immune system. It incorporates aspects of many other fields such as psychology, neuroscience, immunology, physiology, endocrinology and behavioural medicine.
It focuses on how the immune system and nervous system interact with neurological processes. Another way to say it is how our psychological condition and neurological processes affect our body’s health and wellbeing.
Psychological factors leads to neurological responses resulting in:
As far back as 1911 Walter Cannon at Harvard University coined the term ‘Homeostasis’ referring to the need for mental and physical balance through the Greek words homoios (similar) and stasis (position). He studied animals and observed that changes in emotional states such as anxiety, distress or rage lead to movements in the stomach stopping – the ‘fight or flight’ response.
Moving on from Cannon’s work was Hans Seye in the 1930 discovered that rats reacted to stress. He actually discovered this because he was extremely clumsy in his treatment of the rats. He would try and inject them but miss them, drop them, chase after them and so on. After a few months of this he discovered the rats had ulcers and enlarged adrenal glands (source of some stress hormones). After more tests and experiments he concluded that the rats had ‘stress’. He concluded:
1. The body has a similar set of stress responses to a broad array of stressors.
2. If the stressors go on too long they make you ill.
Several years’ work formed the foundation of the General Adaption Syndrome, which has three stages:
- a. The Stage of Stress Alarm Reaction
- b. The Stage of Stress Resistance
- c. The Stage of Stress Exhaustion – leading to illness
Leading Scientists have proved that as the body can become ill from stress, it also has the ability to self-heal which will be covered during the course as you learn How to Heal.
- Why don’t the NHS offer it?back to top
This is a very good question.
The NHS have not traditionally referred patients to alternative health and you can read more on this under the condition’s ‘Doctors v Mind-Body Healing’ section. However, there have been some recent changes and the NHS has started to send clients to Acupuncture for back related issues and this is a step in the right direction. But it may be a long time before more headway is made here. Clinical trials and research is being done all the time on Mind-Body Healing and the NHS is involved in this. Hopefully in the future it will be supported by the NHS which can help reduce costs for patients.
- Why do the sessions go over 6 weeks rather than a few days?back to top
We know you will probably not be able to absorb everything in just a few days and has seen many times people forget vital information when it is not explained repeatedly. Also it gives you the time to use the tools in real life and find the support to enhance your learning. It also ensures that we are with you every step of the way as you heal and experience new challenges or stresses.
Finally, we care that you do get well and want to make sure you are well on your way to recovery before the programme ends; we do not take your money and run! You pay at each session and we expect you to move through the stages of healing from session to session – so you can actually see you are getting value for your money!
